McMillan Class Descriptions

Ballistic Development: This class is aimed at the Law Enforcement and Military Operator who has to have a good working knowledge of his weapons ballistic characteristics to maximize hit potential, while staying within the Rules of Engagement. The class is designed and presented by McMillan Operator Development staff and a MIT Physicist Lyman Hazelton. The class will be broken down into easy to understand packages and will follow the basic format of:

  • Projectile design
  • Internal ballistics
  • External ballistics
  • Terminal ballistics
  • Barrier penetration

Aerial Platform: This class has been produced with the collaboration of Dillon Aero, designers of the world famous mini guns. The class will allow Law Enforcement and Military personnel the chance to learn and practice the engagement of targets from an aerial platform. The class will run using Dillon Aero helicopters and McMillan bolt and semi-automatic rifles, and will cover all calibers from .223-.50, to ensure the student leaves with a complete record of all potential options.  You will also get a chance to operate a fully automatic door gun, to include the mini-gun and other machine guns.  The class will cover the following but not exhaustive subjects:

  • McMillan weapon familiarization
  • Basic range application of fire (all weapons)
  • Selection of aircraft
  • Aerial mission planning
  • Air crew terminology
  • Aircraft preparation
  • Aircraft safety
  • Aerial fighting drills

Basic .50 Operators: With the growing need and justification of the inclusion of heavy caliber weapons in Security Force armories, this class is designed to introduce the Law Enforcement and Military operator to the use of the .50 cal rifle. The class is designed to provide the students with a good working knowledge of the weapon and a record of shooting to form the basis of their 50 cal data, while producing a qualified 50 operator. The class will include the following, but not exhaustive, subjects:

  • Basic strip and assembly skills
  • Weapon safety
  • Load, unload and miss-fire drills
  • Shot placement
  • Employment
  • Application of fire 300-1000 yards
  • Basic barrier penetration
  • Moving target engagement

Counter Sniper: The majority of counter sniper class’s focus on range time and sniper on sniper engagements. At McMillan we have structured a class that goes to the heart of the issue, namely that of preventing a counter sniper related issue from forming in the first place. This class is split evenly between academic and practical range time and is designed to produce a sniper who can plan and conduct a counter sniper operation as well as deploy against an identified threat. The class will teach various related skills, range shooting and a practical student planned counter sniper operation. The basic lessons covered will be:

  • Foreign sniper training
  • Human nature
  • Deductive skills
  • Counter sniper drills (urban-rural)
  • Application of fire (300-500 yards)
  • Rapid engagement drills
  • Sniper on sniper drills
  • Counter sniper operations planning
  • Practical counter sniper FTX

Barrier Research: There are many situations in today’s world were operators find themselves having to engage threats who are concealed or obscured by different forms of barrier. Here at McMillan we provide a 2-day course designed to allow Law Enforcement and Military operators to conduct their own research under the guidance of our staff and to dispel all doubt.  The class will allow the students to conduct testing at their own pace, shooting against various forms of everyday barriers and then record their own data for team and individual operational use.  The class will allow research shooting against the following, but not exhaustive, targets:

  • Vehicles (head on/side on/rear profile)
  • Engine blocks
  • Axles
  • Various types of building material
  • Body armour
  • Helmets
  • Glass
  • Simulated military targets

Covert Hide: With the growing need to deploy and observe elements of the local community, in order to gather counter terrorist information, McMillan is conducting a dedicated covert hide course.  The class draws on the vast experience in counter terrorist operations of the British Army and teaches proven operational skills to those at liberty to hear them. With terrorists taking months and years to deploy a large-scale attack, there will be observable detail to see and hence use against them if you are trained to operate in close confinement within the street of your own or a foreign nation. The class will cover the following subjects:

  • Intro to terrorism
  • The terrorist mindset
  • Selection of urban hides
  • Reconnaissance
  • Methods of entry and occupation of a hide
  • Hide routine
  • Active and passive compromise
  • Hide construction
  • Covert hide FTX

Basic Sniper: This class is designed to provide departments / units with a top grade new recruit, who is both operationally qualified and an asset to the team. We will take the new or inexperienced operator and provide a solid grounding from which to build, with the student leaving with not only a good level of weapon skills, but also data and confidence to use them. Too many basic classes include advanced skills in a basic format, when what the new guy needs is time and confidence on his new weapons and tactics. At McMillan, we have the experience to know you cannot produce a basic/advanced sniper in 5 days and so our basic class is just that, basic skill orientated. The class will include the following, yet not exhaustive, subjects:

  • Weapon safety
  • Stripping and assembly
  • Cleaning drills
  • Load, unload and miss-fire drills
  • Theory and principles of shooting
  • Telescopic sight use
  • Wind allowance
  • Grouping and zero of rifle
  • Basic application of fire 100-300 yards
  • Alternate shooting positions
  • Basic angle shooting
  • Moving target skills
  • Observation skills
  • Camouflage & concealment skills
  • The stalk

Advanced Sniper: The advanced sniper class is designed to both compliment and further the basic skills class. It is designed for the experienced team member or the team commander to attend and both revise skills as well as learn new ones, with a view to taking them back to his unit. The class will begin with a revision period of basic skills to allow for any “cobwebs” to be cleared away, as we appreciate units are very busy and may not always get the requested range time. Once done the class will steadily move on to advanced levels of shooting with allowance for the recording of new data. The class will cover the following, but not exhaustive, subjects:

  • Basic skill revision
  • Application of fire 100-1000 yards
  • High angle shooting (up and downhill targets)
  • Glass shooting
  • Urban hide shooting
  • Vehicle shooting platforms
  • Improvised shooting platforms
  • Intro to the .50 cal shoot
  • Coordinated shoot drills
  • Displaced observer shooting
  • Anti material shooting
  • Intro to aerial platform
  • Intro to counter sniper operations
  • Sniper on sniper training
  • Full mission profile stalk
