The heart of every McMillan Tactical Rifle is the McMillan action. The McMillan action is based on the accuracy principles set forth by company founder Gale McMillan in the pioneering days of benchrest shooting. These principles, refined over the years, are now widely recognized as "best practices" among benchrest competitors and precision custom gunsmiths.
TIGHT BENCHREST TOLERANCES.
Decades of experience in the benchrest circuit have shown that absolute concentricity of the bolt and the action body around the axis defined by the bore line of the barrel is paramount to precision shooting. Each McMillan action is CNC machined from a centerless ground billet blank, not a casting. The face of the action is absolutely perpendicular to the axis of the bolt. Tolerances on general metalwork are held to within 0.005". Critical parts are held to 0.0005" tolerances. Barrel threads and the chamber are cut to critical tolerances and fit by hand.
BOLT-WAYS ARE WIRE EDM MACHINED, NOT BROACHED.
This produces cleaner machining, tighter tolerances and a butter smooth feel when you operate the bolt. Bolt lugs are hand lapped to the receiver to provide equal-force, square contact on both lugs during cartridge ignition to minimize side thrust or torque on the action body, barrel shank and bedding surfaces.
SQUARE-SURFACED RECOIL LUGS.
Recoil lugs are surface ground on both sides and pinned to the receiver to produce a perfectly square mating between the action face and the barrel shank.
PREMIUM GRADE STAINLESS STEEL.
The body of the action is machined from 17-4 stainless steel. This is a tougher, more corrosion resistant material compared to 4000-series alloy often used on firearms. The surface of the action is hardened to 42-43 RC. The bolt body uses even tougher 9310 steel, surface hardened to over 60 RC.
CLAW EXTRACTOR FOR POSITIVE FEEDING.
The McMillan action uses a "Sako-style" claw extractor of our own design. This produces positive extraction and push-round feeding.
DUAL FAIL-SAFE EJECTOR.
The McMillan action uses a Remington-style plunger ejector, plus a secondary backup spring-loaded mechanical ejector that lifts up as the bolt body passes over it.
RECESSED BOLT FACE FOR STRENGTH.
The bolt face, the barrel shank and the action all surround the cartridge head to add strength in this critical area during ignition.
ANTI-GLARE DURACOAT COATING.
Most exterior metal surfaces receive a Duracoat coating. This provides additional corrosion resistance for harsh environments and gives an excellent base coat for tactical marksmen who will later paint their firearms to match the urban or field conditions where they are deployed.
The trigger is tuned to a 3 lb. pull which is standard for most professional tactical organizations. The trigger pull can be adjusted by any competent gunsmith.
HINGED FLOORPLATE OR DETACHABLE BOX MAGAZINE.
A positive functioning hinged steel floorplate provides easy unloading, yet is more rugged than production firearms to withstand the rigors of daily field use. Or you may choose our floorplate system that includes a reliable-feeding detachable box magazine. The prominent magazine release can be operated easily with gloved fingers.
THREAD CAP PROVIDED.
A cap protects threads when a suppressor or brake is not in use.
MATCH GRADE BARRELS.
All McMillan barrels are premium-selected, hand-lapped, match-grade barrels from the finest barrel makers in the country. Barrels are stainless steel with a matte finish.
